Legends of Lime Avenue Comes to Life in Wisbech

On Saturday, October 26th, we came together with the Waterlees estate community to host a unique event that was an afternoon and evening filled with music, storytelling and puppetry.

November 2024

We’ve been working all year with residents in Wisbech as well as with Orchards Church of England Academy on “Legends of Lime Avenue”, to bring this vibrant celebration of local stories and creativity to life.

Thanks to funding provided by Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group which owns and manages thousands of homes across Fenland, the festivities included a puppet theatre exhibition, music, fireside storytelling and food. The evening culminated with a special shadow puppet performance that brough the legends of Lime Avenue to life.

This family-friendly gathering was a perfect opportunity for community members to connect, celebrate, and enjoy the rich tapestry of stories from Lime Avenue and its residents.

The event presented the culmination of extensive community collaboration, featuring work created by Orchards C of E Academy students and Waterlees residents. Acclaimed playwright Dan Allum worked hand-in-hand with community members to develop an original script that wove together local stories and legends, both past and present, centered around Lime Avenue. The route from the school to the event arena was beautifully adorned with lime leaf window decorations created by local residents. Artist Liz Falconbridge led engaging shadow puppet workshops at Orchards C of E Academy, creating stunning visuals that featured in the event’s grand finale.

It has been truly inspiring to witness the creativity and community spirit that has gone into Legends of Lime Avenue. We loved getting to meet everyone over food, music and plenty of tea and cake as we celebrated the vibrant stories of the Waterlees estate.

Today has been fantastic to see communities come together.’
‘I felt very happy that this is on my street.’

With further support from Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group, we are delighted that we can continue to work with the community throughout 2025 to present an exciting intergenerational project entirely developed by young people. Watch this space for more info!
